Coming of Age movies enjoy the privileged position of being one of the rare film genres that depicts the often-turbulent transition between adolescence and adulthood. The themes touched upon in these films, defined by identity, growth, and self-discovery, simply resonate across generations. Here's a look at ten of the most impactful coming-of-age films which shaped the genre.
1. The Graduate (1967)
The classic coming-of-age film The Graduate follows Dustin Hoffman as the current college graduate Benjamin Braddock, who becomes involved in an affair with an older woman, Mrs. Robinson. The movie captures the confusion and disillusionment of youth as Benjamin navigates societal expectations and his own desires. Its iconic ending, where Benjamin and Elaine sit in the bus and wonder what lies ahead for them in the future, stays with viewers, as it captures the complexity of adulthood.
2. Moonlight (2016)
Moonlight narrates the powerful tale of Chiron, a young black man struggling with his identity and sexuality in a harsh Miami neighborhood. Told in three defining acts of his life, this Oscar winner for Best Picture is an evocative coming-of-age tale of love, friendship, and self-acceptance. Critics praised it for its poignant storytelling and evocative depth, which placed it head and shoulders above other films of its genre.
3. Welcome to the Dollhouse (1995)

The Fabelmans was an autobiographical film by Steven Spielberg himself! Here he put so much time into telling a story about growing up and being surrounded by the urge to become a filmmaker. 5. Didi (2024)

Throughout the film the main character, Chris, attempts to achieve his dream of becoming a popular YouTuber while dealing with the cultural expectations of his family and figuring out who his true friends are. Though the movie occasionally threatens to veer into coming-of-age film or tv cliches, like Chris ditching his friends for who he assumes to be “the cool kids”, the characters are relatable and realistically written, drawing one in to Chris’ story, whether they can relate to growing up in the age of YouTube or growing up in a culture different from the regular “American” culture.
6. Belfast (2021)

8. Rushmore (1998)
Wes Anderson's Rushmore gives an account of Max Fischer, an ambitious pupil at an expensive prep school. The film touches on love, rivalry, and the pursuit of dreams. Its unique visual style and quirky characters earn it a beloved spot in the coming-of-age canon.
9. Superbad (2007)
